Beauty in Contrast

Bidri

The Beauty in Contrast project celebrates the rich cultural heritage of India while showcasing the seamless blend of tradition and modernity. BIDRI, a metal handicraft from the city of Bidar in southern India, is recreated in this screen to remind one of the silvery stars against a dark sky. Designed for a luxury home in Jubilee Hills, the screen is made out of lathe-turned wooden panels that act as a divider between the formal and informal living spaces, while also providing an artistic touch to the overall ambiance of the house.

Process

After brainstorming on the final form using CAD, a low-fidelity prototype is created to better understand the scale and form.

The cylendrical block is then turned on the lathe to give the desired form

On completion, the pieces are PU coated, polished and finally, an inlay pattern is carved.

The wood is stuck together and shaped on the table saw
